The distance that the Hubble Space Telescope takes photographs at can only be measured in light years. Light travels at 5.6 trillion miles per year. A single galaxy can be a hundred thousand light years in diameter. Right now Hubble is taking photographs of entire galaxies that are 1.3 billion light years away from earth. We are actually seeing those galaxies as they were 1.3 billion years ago, they may or may not even be there now. The Universe is 13.7 billion years old and to cross from one to the other would take 46 billion years.
